Students 2 Science

Students 2 Science, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) model program in New Jersey that bridges the needs of the public and private sectors. Its mission is to inspire, motivate, and educate elementary, middle and high school students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM subjects). It does so by providing an authentic, state-of-the-art laboratory experience complete with modern instrumentation and professional scientists. Additionally, it offers a remote, web-based virtual STEM experience that eliminates geographic and language constraints and broadens our reach to serve a wider audience. Teams of students, working collaboratively with scientific professionals who serve as role models, solve real life problems while being introduced to a wide variety of 21st century STEM career opportunities.

NJACS is proud to be a sponsor of Students 2 Science. A number of NJACS members have served as volunteers. Typical commitment is 2-3 days a month.

Students 2 Science Virtual Lab – Call for Volunteers

Students 2 Science is looking for volunteers to work on their virtual lab at at various public schools in NJ. The experiments span the full education spectrum-from elementary school through high school. See the list of schools and calendar across NJ during 2016.

Overview of the various roles for the v-lab

All teachers and volunteers will receive full electronic training materials (a video of the lesson with all relevant information) as well as a pdf of the day’s experiment. The commitment is for 2 hours of your time. No on-site training is required or needed. The volunteer will also receive specific information on the school and class that they will be serving in as a volunteer.

The school is responsible for receiving the kit from us (and safety gear consisting of gloves and glasses if required),| testing the technology, and assuring that the virtual link is open and good to go that day. Their IT person is fully in charge of this. The volunteers are NOT responsible for IT.

The teachers are expected to go through the same training materials as well and are responsible for assisting.

The volunteer should be prepared to set up the experiment as described on the training video, assisting with the experiment, and helping with clean-up. The kit stays with the school. We are teaching the experiment and if something happens, technology-wise, it is up to the volunteer and the teachers to decide if they feel comfortable running the experiment themselves. They are certainly not expected to do so if they are not comfortable with it.

A retired scientist would be the most flexible and we love retirees (or unemployed) in our programs! Many companies actually promote corporate “volunteerism” and are encouraging of people donating their time. The time required for any one experiment in the classroom is only about 2 hours start to finish so it’s not too arduous. Since the training materials are electronic, the volunteers can complete this on their own schedule.
